 "Questionable build quality" 2010-03-01
By Joe Pacific (Hawaii)
I had to return the first 10-24mm lens as I found an oily smear between the inner and outer barrels. I wiped it clean but it appeared again after rotating the zoom ring several times. Repeated cleanings did not resolve the problem. I was also concerned that the zoom ring did not rotate as smoothly as I had expected and it had a rather rough sound to it. The replacement lens did not have any oily material on the barrel but did have the same rough sound when rotating the zoom. Similarly, the zoom ring on the replacement lens did not rotate smoothly. I haven't had time to thoroughly review the quality of the photos this lens can produce, but I must say I am disappointed at spending over $800 on a lens that just doesn't seem to be built very well.

 "As Good as Advertised" 2010-02-15
By Robert Hesselbein (Madison, WI)
Most of my thoughts echo those already expressed by other raters, but allow me to add that this particular lens has opened up an amazing avenue of creativity not found in other lenses. Ken Rockwell reviewed this specific lens and wide-body benefits extraordinarly well, and I recommend anyone seeking this sort of tool to examine his writing before purchasing. I'm certainly glad I did. This is a magnificent lens!

"Awesome range, not really fast, not really cheap" 2010-02-03
By rj
This lens is a lot of fun! IQ is pretty good. Most of the distortion this lens produces can be corrected without fancy tools if you have to and the sharpness (pointed out by other reviews) is good enough to satisfy me at a 8x10 print size. If you view your shots at 100% you might find issues were cheaper normal range lenses perform slightly better - but I guess these are physical consequences of this extrem focal length.

I like the range. 10 mm is awesome - but 24 mm still allows you to use it for "normal" snapshots with people in it that don't look too weird. This makes this lens much more versatile in my opinion than optically superior lenses with a smaller focal range. Sometimes I wish it was faster, but I wouldn't want to see the prize tag either if it were...

For a DX lens, it is not quite cheap, but it is certainly a better build quality than many other DX lenses.

The reason to spend the money for this lens is if you want the widest super-wide angle available for DX that allows you to go to a moderate 36mm FX equivalent and still has a very acceptable weight. The Tokina 11-16 costs less, is faster, potentially optically superior, but heavier and limited in it's focal range.

It comes down to range and weight vs. speed and price. I think I would pick the Nikon again.

 "Great Lens 10-24mm" 2010-01-24
By Brian E. Page (Dunwoody, Ga)
This is a great lens. Building and scenic photos turn out extremely well. The close ups for people the resolution is outstanding with the Macro effect.

Started using warming filters Tiffen 802 with flash and indoors for a nice effect.

Great choice for an all round lens.

"This one is the best." 2009-10-07
By Douglas L. Hale (Houston USA)
I read everything I could about wide zooms FX and DX. For DX, this one is the best. I bought it for a photo safari to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada, and another to Big Bend National Park.

The Tokina may be a good lens, but the zoom range is very limited. At 11mm by 16mm the Nikon is at least as good plus you still have range to use. That makes the Nikkor a no brainer.

I just returned from a 8 day photo safari of the upper east coast of the USA, and Canada. I took over 800 photos most with this lens. As it turned out I was very happy I bought the Nikon 10-24mm, and did not choose the Tokina 11-16mm. The added range made all the difference.

Light Houses, harbor sunsets, ships at sea, city streets, building interiors, and lots more. This lens was on my D90, and a 18-200mm on my D40.

 "Shoddy workmanship" 2010-03-01
By W. Jones (San Diego, CA)
When I bought this lens I noticed that it was made in Thailand. That should have been my first clue. Like all the "newer" Nikkors it is made with a lot of plastic. After one month of shooting (about 2000 actuations) on an assignment in Japan the zoom stopped working smoothly, then stopped working at all. It also will not stop up or down. I have a lot of other Nikkor lenses that are much more solidly made, but some of them can only be used in the manual mode on my digital cameras. I'm sending it to Nikon's repair facility tomorrow and we'll see what happens. Hopefully they will repair it quickly. It's more than annoying to spend almost $1000 on a lens that fails. This is the first Nikkor lens I have had in 26 years of shooting that has given me any sort of trouble. I guess I was do.

 "A Necessity for Me" 2010-03-01
By GradyPhilpott
I'm not a pro, but my hobby requires me to take a lot of pictures. I've been working with point and shoots in the year I've been involved in this activity and I just couldn't deal with the shutter-lag and other limitations of the cameras I was using, so I made the jump to a dSLR, the Nikon D3000.

It was an excellent choice, but the 18-55mm kit lens, while a good lens in it's own right, just didn't have the flexibility necessary to get the shots I need and frequently changing out lenses is just not an option.

Almost every professional reviewer has lauded this lens, while noting its compromises, so I bought it even though it was a stretch for my monthly budget. I have no regrets.

For someone who used an image-stabilized, super-zoom point and shoot, the D3000 and this lens is the perfect upgrade. I can see that eventually I will want a wider lens for special purposes, but until that time comes, this is the perfect choice. I need a lens that can do it all and do it well.

I agree that the lens-creep issue is a problem, but it is a manageable one. When I'm not shooting, I lock the lens, even though at 18mm the lens doesn't creep yet. When I bring the camera up for a shot, the lock is easy to switch off with my left thumb, so it's just one small adjustment among many I've had to make to accommodate a more complex and more capable camera.

I would say to those new to dSLRs, buy whatever Nikon camera body you like and get this lens at the same time. Yeah, it's not cheap, but it's a lens that will more than meet your needs until you become a more sophisticated shooter and beyond.

"Zoom is a little loose" 2010-02-09
By Bri (Colorado)
When pointing straight, this lens is a fantastic zoom. It's good with focusing and is relatively quick. Nikon's VR technology is also really good. The only complaint I have is that when I point up or down the lens will start expanding or pulling back on its own based on the gravitational force. I expected to be able to set this lens to a certain barrel length and have it stay there until I changed it.

"Great for beginners and if you only had one lens" 2010-01-21
By G. Tiu
When I first started with DSLR photography I was stoked about this lens

I got it and could not be happier. 18-200mm fast, take it with me everywhere. It sat on my D40 then my D200

Then as a photographer I began to grow. I wanted faster lenses, Prime lenses, etc. Since then this lens has sat in my bag

I got a feel for how I like my pictures to be taken and what I needed was something faster. If i wanted zoom I wanted something further.

Also since i will be moving up to the FX body soon this lens will be useless since it is a DX lens.

As a customer decide if what you plan on doing is moving up in photography and taking it to another level,

or being happy with prosumer DSLRs with DX lenses.

If it is the latter, get this lens

Otherwise invest in fx lenses that will grow with you and this expensive hobby

"A great lens for DX users" 2010-02-24
By Joseph Jones (Atlanta, Ga.)
There has been a lot that has already been written about this lens, so I won't go into any technical specifications or IQ performance. Put simply, the 35 1.8 DX is one of the best performing lenses I use on my D80, second only to my 16-85 DX VR (for versatility sake). At first, I wasn't intent upon having this lens, but I needed a better fast prime, so I picked one up about a month ago, before a trip to the Aquarium in town. Well, it performed quite well, better than anticipated actually. IQ at ISO 1600 gets a little iffy for me, using my D80, but in a pinch, using this lens, and I was pleasantly surprised. This lens is a must have for the casual DX shooter, as a matter of principle, in my opinion. It's pretty cheap, very simple to use, focus is super fast and accurate, and it weighs almost nothing. Despite its near weightlessness, it is built quite well - very solid, like my 16-85 VR, it doesn't "feel" cheap at all. And the hood is a nice touch, it isn't too big, and reverses over the front of the lens to just cover the focus ring, so one can still use the lens with it reversed. That touch may not be a big deal for most people, but for me, it simply means I don't have to "keep up" with the hood. Now a word about distortion, this lens has it, and it's pretty strong. So beware of it if you try to use it like you would a normal lens on full frame. Though approximately the same perspective as "normal", it is still a 35mm lens. It'll let you get close, between 4 and 6 inches from the front glass, but don't try to shoot a person's face that close. Again, this isn't a 50mm, which traditionally has almost zero distortion. If you get close, things will bulge at you (if you shoot portraits, you'll understand what that means, and you'll select this lens only for groups or full body shots). This is by no means, a problem. I just want people to be aware of it. Other than the distortion, there is really no flaws to speak of. So if you're reading reviews, that means you're interested. And if you get down as far as mine, just DO IT! you'll not regret it.

 "Absolutely awesome for D40" 2010-02-20
By Bryn Nealis (New York, NY)
Got this lens for Christmas and absolutely love it. I have a D40 and used to have the 50mm 1.8 lens that didn't auto focus. I hardly used it. This lens is an AF-S lens that autofocuses on all of the new Nikon bodys which makes it amazing. I put it on the camera and haven't taken it off since I got it. I absolutely love it! Focuses fast, large aperture, and just the right zoom level (50mm was too much). Get one! You'll love it!

Excellent lens, a great value for those who take images in low light conditions or seek the depth of field bokeh effects that come with lower f-stop settings. Solidly built, this makes a perfect walking-around lens; an excellent companion to the 55-200mm I typically work with on my D5000.

"Amazing lens for such a low price." 2010-02-15
By Vincent Gizzi (Albany, New York USA)
I have never been disappointed by a Nikon product to date. This Nikkor lens is no different and lives up to and exceeds my expectations. One of the fastest lenses I own, this 50mm 1.4 will stop any action dead in its tracks. If you're looking for a portrait lens, this is your glass. The bokeh is extremely creamy because of the speed and the extra aperture diaphragm blades. I also own the 50mm 1.8 - NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE! The optical quality *FAR* exceeds that of its little brother.

 "Wonderful lens!" 2010-02-10
By Jens Zorn (Ann Arbor, MI USA)
I had been using an earlier version of the 50mm AF f/1.8 lens on my D100 and D40. Then, because the older f/1.8 lens had to be manually focused on the D40, I bought the 50mm f/1.4. This is a step up from the f/1.8, not only for the extra light gathering power but also with the internal focusing motor that permits AF operation on the D40. It is relatively expensive ($400 or so), but with Nikon's policy of maintaining backward compatibility in lens mounts, I regard it as a component that can be used when the D100 and D40 are retired in favor of more modern equipment. The $400 is an expense that can be amortized over the next decade. Overall, an excellent lens that I find particularly satisfying for portrait work.

"Great little lens --But not worth and upgrade" 2010-02-08
By Leigh McMullen (Atlanta, GA)
This review is specifically for folks, like myself who already own the AF-D 50 f1.4 and are thinking of "upgrading" to the AF-S version of this lens. I was hoping that the AF-S "upgrade" would bring snap-quick focus speeds. It doesn't. The AF-S version of the lens does not focus noticeably faster than the older AF-D.

Additionally, optically the AF-D and AF-S 50 f1.4s are indistinguishable.

If you already have the AF-D 50 f1.4 don't bother trying to upgrade your glass. if you don't this is a great lens and everyone should own one. You might consider seeing if you can get a discount on an older AF-D version and save a little money.

"Great lens, especially for low light, no flash work" 2010-01-07
By AJR
It's fast and great optically. For portraits or poorly lit subjects where a flash is not allowed (or not wanted) this is the perfect lens. On a DX format camera it's a bit long (field of view is about 75mm equivalent) for some inside work, a 28 or 35mm focal length might be a better option (but 1.8 is the faster you can get in those focal lengths).

The lens is fantastic. Very smooth. Beautiful pictures. I liked not having to change lenses to zoom in. Check out the f/. It is a fast lens! The VR also works great. But I had a hard time carrying it as it is heavy. I usually hand carry my camera with lens on when I hike (you never know when that perfect shot composes itself!).  "LOVE this lens" 2010-02-13
By Gift Card Recipient (okinawa, japan)
I'm just a beginner and own a Nikon D60 with both the 18-55mm wide angle kit lens as well as a 50-200mm zoom lens. I added this lens for the fact that to me, it combines the benefits of both those lenses in one, at an excellent price point. I can take photos that have shallow depth of field and I can take them without having to use the zoom lens while not having to be 2568974 ft away from my subject. Granted this lens will not work in all scenarios, but for a situation where I'm in close proximity to my subject but am looking for that portrait effect, this is FABULOUS. I read that some people had trouble fitting this lens on their D60 but I've had absolutely no problems with it. The size is so compact (smaller than my 18-55mm kit lens for sure) that I'm pretty confident this is the lens I'll be keeping on my camera majority of the time from now on. Yes, it does not auto focus on the D60. But I like the creativity that's allowed with having to manually focus the image. All in all, I'm VERY happy with the lens. I recommend it hands down.

"Best Lens I have for my D90" 2010-02-12
By Luis A. Da Silva
I use this lens all the time, it rarely comes off. Very inexpensive but the picture quality and DOF are better then some more expensive lens. No zoom but it you just need to be ok with getting close to your subject. Worth every penny!!

 "Must Buy...." 2010-02-09
By Varun Pauddar (Houston, TX USA)
bought this Lens for my Nikon D5000, I was afraid that it might not behave in accordance to the caliber of the D5000 body, but I was amazed to see the results. This is a nikkor lens manufactured especially for Nikon DSLR's, I own a 70-300 telephoto, 18-55 standard nikon lens and a fish eye and now this 50mm portrait lens, which completes the package. The lens does not comes with a motorized automatic focus and so is sensitive enough to through the picture of focus so mind that you ensure the frame is in focus. I would recommend using eye-piece over live view feature, it helps ensuring crisp picture...... long story short.... must buy lens, awesome for portrait photography. The depth of field could be controlled by setting the aperture, you will be amazed to see that the DoF changes dramatically just by setting aperture, so get the lens and start shooting, I have posted few customer provided images, so please chck them to see the fantabulous results...... enjoy clicking

"Great lens but no autofocus on the D5000 or the D40" 2010-02-08
By Kiran Shyama (Ma, USA)
I really enjoy this lens. The large aperture is wonderful. However the lens has no motor in it, so on the Nikon D500 and the D40 there is no auto focus available. I do not know if it will work on other Nikon cameras; these are the only two I have tried it with.

 "Solid, High-Quality, Low-Cost Lens" 2010-02-07
By Jonathan Aldinger
At this price, and with the right camera body, you can't go wrong with this lens. Purchased originally for use on my D70, I now use it on my newer D90. It has proven indispensable in low-light situations, and makes for a very good portrait lens on APS-C sensor bodies. Build quality is extremely solid, and the front glass is recessed which keeps it protected. The size and weight are almost insignificant when attached to the camera body - I can pop this on my D90, throw it over my shoulder, and walk around all day, barely noticing it's there. f/1.8 produces very usable shots, with very shallow DOF.

Be aware:

* If you are shooting with a lower-end camera body (D40, D60, D5000), this lens will work, but without auto-focus - and focusing manually at f/1.8 on a body with a crop-frame sensor is quite a challenge.

* If you are shooting any APS-C body (D40, D60, D5000, D70, D80, D90, D300), the crop-factor of the sensor size will yield an effective 75mm focal length. This is fine for outdoor shots, but it's a little too tight for indoor shooting.

For both of the above situations, I would recommend the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras lens over this 50mm (I own both). The 35mm is more expensive, intended for crop-frame bodies only, slightly larger, and of lesser build quality. However, it's still a great lens, and has a much more usable focal length for indoor shooting.
